Annual Crestmont Cleanup June 26

Hard working familyIt is that time of year again on June 26th, 2016 (9am – 1:30pm) when all of Crestmont gets out to clean up their yards, garages, and basements and gathers up the debris and garbage to bring down to the Crestmont Hall where the City of Calgary has packer trucks waiting.  GEEP will also have bins for electronics and the Crestmont Community Association will have food, coffee and snacks.

Make it a fun day for your family!  We will have pick-up sticks, vests, gloves and garbage bags at the hall so you can take your family out into the neighbourhood green spaces to pick up garbage and debris that blow in from the wind.

This is a FREE event for everyone, although we encourage you to get or renew your Crestmont Community Association Membership if you have not already done so.

Items accepted include:

  • furniture decor items
  • yard waste & grass clippings
  • materials from minor repair work
  • general garbage
  • mattresses (although we STRONGLY encourage you to recycle your used mattress instead!)
  • household electronics
  • metal
  • tires
  • barbecues

Items NOT accepted:

  • chemical products or containers
  • paint
  • antifreeze
  • oil or oil filters
  • car batteries
  • propane tanks

Recycle IconWe will also set up a free table for items that are still in good condition that you no longer wish to keep. Someone else in the community may be able to use it. It’s all about recycling items in a safe manner.

This is a family friendly event and a good way to teach our children the value of keeping all our spaces clean and to feel like they can contribute in a positive way by giving back to their community.

Please check back here for any updates / changes prior to June 26th.

From Our May 10th Safety Event…

Police Officer with HandcuffsThank you to everyone who attended the Community Safety Chat with Constable Price on May 10th.  This was a very informative session and we learned a few key points:

  • Speed is a personal choice, can you live with the consequences?
  • Out-of-sight out-of-mind.  If you leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle, expect that sooner or later they will be removed for you.
  • Keep your insurance and registration in your wallet.  If someone breaks into your vehicle and your insurance and registration are there, they can simply pull into your garage, close the garage door and use something in your garage to break into your home.  Your address is on those documents, so don’t leave them in your vehicle.
  • If you see something suspicious then don’t be afraid to call.  It is safer to make the call then it is to think “oh it’s probably nothing” and then something gets stolen, damaged or worse.  Make the call to 911, they are happy to hear your voice.
  • Take flyers off your door, it is a sign to thieves that you are not home.  When your neighbours are on holiday take their flyers as well, help out your community.
  • Get an alarm system, at the very least it reduces how long a burglar can be in your home.  It is better they have 10 – 20 minutes to look around and then get out than if they have the entire day to explore everywhere in your home.
  • A Doorbell Camera can notify you when someone is at your door so you can call the police if they are not known to you and try to break in.  Most interact with your smartphone so you don’t even have to be home to keep an eye open.
  • Do not give money to homeless people. Give money to CUPS and Mustard Seed, etc. The money doesn’t help the homeless people directly and there are several “professional homeless people” that make a lot of money doing it. Maybe even more than you do.  If you want to help, give your money to the service providers whose job it is to help the homeless properly.
  • Don’t be a vigilante, be the best witness you can be.  Especially when it is just property, that can always be replaced.  Your life cannot.  Everyone has a smartphone or other cameras handy so take pictures, call the police, get the bad guys caught red-handed.

Community Safety Presentation

Just say NO to CRIMEHey Crestmont, did you know we have our very own Police Constable assigned to our neighbourhood ?

On May 10th, 7pm at the Crestmont Hall Constable Damian Price will be in Crestmont presenting an informative session on how to keep our community safe.

Crestmont is a quiet neighbourhood, however if you view the Calgary Police Service’s Crimes Web Mapping Application there have been 21 incidents of crime in our area in the last 6 months.  Keep in mind that those are only the crimes that have been reported.  Crestmont homeowners should learn how to effectively report crime and learn to be a good neighbor so we can all help support the residents of this wonderful community.

I hope you can make the time to come down to the Crestmont Hall on May 10th to meet your neighbors, Constable Price and members of the Crestmont Community Association board.  We look forward to meeting you.

Your New Board of Directors for 2016/2017

On Friday April 8th, the Crestmont Community Association had our Annual General Meeting at the Crestmont Hall.  Attendance was excellent and we graciously thank everyone for taking the time out of their day to come down and support us.

Also in attendance was a representative from MLA Deborah Drever’s office and Councillor Ward Sutherland.  We thank them both for their continued support.

This year the AGM was packed with information and updates on area developments and planned community events for this year.

For the first time, all but one of the existing board members threw their hats back in to continue for the next term.  The new board for 2016/2017 is:

Al Del Degan, who will remain in the President role, and the following directors who will likely resume in their current roles (to be officially determined at the next board meeting on April 21st at the hall).

Chris Wolfe, Vice President
Paul Christensen, Treasurer
Stacy Cousins, Secretary
Crystal McGrath, Director at Large

There are still 5 director positions open on the CCA board so if you want to gain some rewarding volunteer experience and give back to your community, please attend any of our future board meetings and you can find out what is involved and how you can best help out.  We meet on the third Thursday of every month at 8:10pm at the hall.

There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer even if you do not want a board of directors position.  We have a huge list of ideas for events in our community and we will only be able to pull them all off with some help from you.

Please enter your email address to sign up for our newsletter to keep informed of the upcoming events as well as volunteer opportunities.

We look forward to serving the Crestmont community.

Al Del Degan

WE NEED YOU!

Finger Pointing at ViewerJust a reminder that tomorrow (April 8th) at 7:00pm at the Crestmont Hall is the Annual General Meeting for your Crestmont Community Association and we need your support.

There are a number of important items to discuss including changes to our bylaws, area development updates and news regarding the Crestmont community and events that we are planning for 2016.

We will also have coffee and snacks to keep your tummy happy.

Please come out and show your support.  Membership sales can be processed at the hall if you don’t already have yours or need to renew.

Grab your neighbours and come on down.

Thanks HOA for Hitmen Fun!

The Crestmont HOA arranged for bus transportation and cheap tickets to a Calgary Hitmen game on March 13th. After the game attendees were invited to a private meet & greet event with Hitmen player #2 Jake Bean.

It was a fun event and on behalf of all those who attended, thank you to the HOA and Danielle for setting this up for us.

Here are a few photos of the event…

Updated our Membership Application page

Due to a major system upgrade of one of our service providers we lost our membership application functionality back in May 2015. After pursuing a number of options we have come up with an interim solution that should get things back on track for memberships.

If your membership is due, please visit our “Become A Member” page and fill out the form. The online payment feature using PayPal is still the same, however it is now disconnected from the membership form.

If you have any problems or questions, please do not hesitate to Contact Us for assistance.

Thanks,
Your friendly Crestmont Community Association
